Dawn found the MacKinnon and Lionblade family, along with Vashti of Ferndale, standing under a huge tree at the edge of the savannah, the fortress within walking distance from it.

Cearan had given his three nephews each a kiss on the forehead while they slept, praying he would see them again to watch them grow and become fine young men.

Now he said his farewells to his brother Lexin, and Lexin’s woman Cerise, the MacKinnon’s kinswoman. Next was Drace, who smiled at him in reassurance. Last was Ki, who tried to be the stoic leader and warrior, but her eyes shone with unshed tears, and gave her away as the loving sister she has always been.

Cearan pulled her close. “I will return to you and Oralia. And I will return with Maggie.”

Vashti stepped up to the siblings. “Are you ready, Lord Cearan?”

She looked him over after he stepped away from Ki. He wore soft leather breeches and tall boots without spurs. There was no need for them as he would be leaving Raven; he was on foot to start. She could see the faint outline of the hilt of his boot knife through the leather of his breeches.

His linen shirt was black, and it laced loosely at the throat. His sword, scabbard, and dagger, along with its belt, were in a sleeve of sheepskin with the wool on the inside to protect them and slung over his back.

He held his saddlebags, which contained extra clothing and his toiletries, a whet stone, the money Drace had given him, and an extra dragon tear. He and Vashti had discussed it and decided that they did not know if Maggie still had hers.

A breeze tugged a lock of his hair loose from his queue as he nodded his readiness. He swallowed nervously and then took a reassuring breath.

“Think of this Mike Brewer,” she instructed. “We believe he was in Egypt with her, but we do not know if he is still there. Drace has told you about him. Think of Mike Brewer and you will find him.”

Cearan nodded again and held his dragon’s tear in his free hand.

“I will see you all again, I promise,” he said and closed his eyes.

And then he was gone.
